CBD-Oil-for-dogs-diagramAre you interested in buying a CBD product for your dog or cat but have no idea where to start? This comprehensive guide will walk you through the ins and outs of CBD oil for dogs & cats and where to buy it.

It’s no secret that CBD oil is gaining massive popularity due to its non-psychoactive properties and amazing health benefits. Recent research reveals that the body’s overall equilibrium greatly improves after using CBD. This is commonly referred to as the bodies natural homeostasis. CBD oil can help the body correct and maintain this homeostasis.

It is important for you as a pet owner to learn about this newly discovered super-herb, as it may help to manage many different health conditions that your pet may have.

It is also important to know where to buy high-quality CBD oil for your dog or cat, as you never want to give cheap supplements to your pet.

Here are some of the important areas concerning the use and purchase of CBD oil that every pet owner should know about.

cbd-for-dogs-tinctureWhat Is CBD Oil?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound in the industrial hemp plant. It is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid in the plant. Currently, CBD is undergoing research as it can potentially carry some really amazing health benefits.

Although humans have been using CBD for years, more recently it has become available for cats and dogs too! CBD is beneficial for pets in many of the same ways as it is for us. In fact, CBD works in the body of all mammals in a similar fashion.

All mammals (humans, dogs, cats, horses, etc…) are born with an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system interacts and helps to regulate many major functions of the body. Taking CBD can positively influence the ECS. You can think of it as CBD can help boost the ECS when need be.

You have probably heard the term “CBD oil”, also known as CBD tincture. This is a combination of raw CBD extract and a carrier oil. There is an entire process for making CBD oil, which we will learn about next.

How Is CBD Oil Made?

In one sentence: CBD oil is made by separating CBD from the hemp plant and combining it with a carrier oil. Let’s expand on this a bit more.

First, to separate the CBD from the hemp plant, it must go through a process known as extraction. There are several ways you can extract CBD. Each way requires a different kind of solvent to pull the CBD from the plant. Four common examples of solvents are CO2, olive oil, butane, and alcohol.

If this sounds confusing right now, don’t worry. We’ll just get straight to the point. The purest and highest quality CBD oil comes from the CO2 extraction method. Other solvents such as butane leave behind nasty byproducts that could potentially be dangerous for your pet’s health.

Once you have the CBD extract, it’s time to combine it with oil. Hempseed oil is a popular choice as it is exceptionally rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Full-Spectrum vs Broad-Spectrum vs Isolate

While browsing for CBD products, you may notice several terms such as “full-spectrum” or “isolate”. To get a better understanding of what these terms mean, let’s take a look at the forms of CBD that are available today.

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-Spectrum, also known as “whole-plant” CBD includes all of the hemp plant’s naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is unique as it also includes THC, although in very low levels. THC is the cannabinoid which gives the user the “high” feeling. However, the amount of THC in hemp-derived CBD is under 0.3%, which is not enough to get your pet high.

In a 2015 study by The Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology, researchers found that full-spectrum CBD extract had a much greater anti-inflammatory effect than CBD isolate alone. What does this mean? In higher doses, the combination of CBD, THC and the other cannabinoids in the hemp plant provides more anti-inflammatory relief than pure CBD isolate does. This is known as the “entourage effect”. Look for CBD cat and dog products containing full-spectrum CBD if you want all the benefits the plant offers.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-Spectrum CBD is very similar to full-spectrum, although with one key difference. The difference is that while full-spectrum CBD contains small amounts of THC, the broad-spectrum contains absolutely no THC. Aside from that, broad-spectrum CBD also includes cannabinoids and terpenes just like its full spectrum counterpart.

Although broad-spectrum CBD contains no THC, we suggest you give your pet full-spectrum CBD oil for best results. This is because of the entourage effect we went over in the last section. Look For CBD dog or cat products containing broad-spectrum if you want all the benefits the plant offers except THC.

CBD Isolate

Simply put, CBD Isolate is CBD in its purest form. It is isolated from all other cannabinoids and terpenes, hence the name “isolate”. CBD isolate is made by refining raw CBD extract into its molecular form, leaving behind only CBD molecule itself.

CBD isolate can come from either the hemp or marijuana plant. Regardless of the source, CBD isolate will never contain THC. This is because isolate contains no other molecules besides CBD. If you only want the benefits of CBD alone, then look for CBD dog and cat products made with pure CBD isolate.

Please note that marijuana and hemp are not the same. Both contain CBD but one also contains high amounts of THC. So what’s the difference between the two? Keep reading to find out…

difference-between-hemp-and-marijuanaWhat’s the Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana?

There are two main species of the cannabis genus plant that you should know about – Hemp and Marijuana.

Both plants naturally produce approximately 113 different chemical compounds commonly referred to as cannabinoids. Each one of these cannabinoids is unique and can have different effects on your body or brain.

The cannabinoid content differs between the two species, as hemp tends to have a lower concentration of cannabinoids than marijuana. Let’s dive deeper into the similarities and differences between the two species.

Hemp vs Marijuana

Hemp (species 1) is a tall bamboo-like species historically originating from Asia. Farmers around the world harvest the hemp stalks to make paper, textiles, rope, and clothing. They also harvest the hemp seeds to make food, cosmetics, paint & lubricants.

The cannabinoid content in hemp is low, resulting in lower THC levels (legally the THC levels needs to be less than 0.3%). Since hemp is legal to import, ship and sell in the US, this makes it a popular source of CBD – the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in hemp. CBD (Cannabidiol) carries many health benefits but will not get you “high”.

Marijuana (species 2) is Hemp’s shorter, bushier cousin. It is popular for it’s for high yielding flowers and high concentration of resin. Both the flower and resin glands are rich in THC – the psychoactive part of the plant that gets you “high”.

The marijuana plant can contain upwards of 20% THC or more, depending on the strain. This is what makes marijuana such a popular candidate among the masses to smoke and ingest. Like CBD, THC also carries many health benefits. However, by taking THC, you will experience a “high”.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Dogs and Cats?

As mentioned earlier CBD is not psychoactive, meaning it does not create any mind-altering effects. There are very few reports of mild side effects from CBD. CBD is considered generally safe for cats and dogs. It can be safely taken with most other prescriptions but it is always recommended that you consult with your vet before introducing any new supplement to your dog or cat. That being said here is a list of the possible side effects CBD may produce.

Dry Mouth

This can happen due to a decrease in saliva production. In dogs, this surfaces as an increase in thirst.

Lower Blood Pressure

With very large doses of CBD, there is the possibility of causing a momentary drop in blood pressure. Although the drop is minuscule, it may cause a short feeling of light-headedness.

Many pet owners use CBD to help calm their pet’s anxiety. The calming effect from CBD may possibly produce slight drowsiness. This is more prevalent when administering high doses of CBD.

Why Buy CBD Oil for Your Dog or Cat?

Now that you know it’s safe and where it comes from, let’s take a look at why so many people use CBD products for their dog or cat. Earlier, we briefly mentioned that CBD is important for your pet because it has medicinal benefits. CBD oil has the ability to fight both chronic and acute diseases in pets. It shows great potential in helping a long list of conditions. To date, many specialists believe CBD can help with up to 50 ailments and possibly more.

CBD helps with

As we can see CBD possibly holds the potential to help with many conditions of various degree. Since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in 1992 scientists have been researching how CBD can help with these ailments and more. However, research into the effects CBD has on all these ailments has been limited. Luckily, some of these major conditions have received much attention. Here are some of the major ailments CBD may help with which have received more scientific research compared to other ailments listed above.

Arthritis in dogs and cats is a chronic condition. A recent study on the effects of CBD and Osteoarthritis (OA) suggests that a “2 mg/kg of CBD twice daily can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with OA”. This study is significant due to the fact that most studies to date have been conducted using lab rats or humans, however, this study was conducted using dogs with OA as test samples. Providing some evidence that CBD may be useful in treating arthritis in pets.

Seizures have been at the forefront of CBD treatable ailments. In fact, seizures are the only ailment for which the FDA has approved a CBD medication to help. In 2018 The FDA approved Epidiolex. This is the first cannabis prescription ever approved by the FDA. Epidiolex contains CBD as an active ingredient. It has been proven to help reduce the amount and intensity of certain seizures.

Pain & Inflammation

Pain is yet another serious ailment which CBD may help relieve. Inflammation is often associated with pain. In Canada CBD has been approved to help treat various forms of acute and chronic pain. Sativex is a Canadian prescription which contains equal parts of CBD and THC. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information NCBI, “Numerous randomized clinical trials have demonstrated safety and efficacy for Sativex in central and peripheral neuropathic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer pain.”

Stress & Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are two correlating ailments which CBD may help to reduce symptoms. In 2015 an analysis of several studies of CBD’s effects on stress and anxiety was concluded by The Journal of the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics. According to the analysis “Overall, existing preclinical evidence strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders.” Separation anxiety, loud noise anxiety, generalized anxiety are just some of the forms of anxiety which are common among pets.

High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure is another serious ailment which CBD may help reduce. As mentioned in the side effects section CBD may lower blood pressure. However, if your dog or cat has high blood pressure you probably would want to lower it if you could. CBD may help you achieve lowering your pets blood pressure which should help avoid risks of heart attack or diabetes. One interesting study concludes that they “have shown for the first time that to our knowledge that, in humans, acute administration of CBD reduces resting blood pressure, with a lower stroke volume and a higher heart rate.”

Digestive Issues

There are many cannabinoid receptors in your pet’s stomach. Consequently, CBD can interact with these receptors and may aid many gastrointestinal problems. At the same time, CBD may promote a healthy digestive system. According to this study “evidence also suggests that dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system might play a role in intestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, as well as obesity.”

This means that if your dog or cat is struggling with an intestinal disorder taking CBD could help regulate the ECS which may correct the disorder. Additionally, regular administration of CBD may serve as a potential way of avoiding these stomach disorders. This is a great example of how CBD can be used to maintain the ECS which may help prevent and/or correct specific ailments.

What Types of CBD Products Can I Buy for Dogs and Cats?

holistapet cbd pet tincture for dogs and catsCBD Pet Tinctures

CBD Pet Tinctures, also known as “CBD oil”, come in small glass bottles filled with highly concentrated CBD. The glass bottle will usually include a dropper which makes it easy to administer the oil. You can drop CBD oil in food, water or directly into your pet’s mouth.

There are several things to consider when buying quality CBD oil for your dog or cat. First, be on the lookout for full-spectrum CBD oil. This will allow your pet to experience full benefits CBD has to offer. This is due to the entourage effect, as mentioned earlier in this article.

Second, check the ingredients label to see the type of oil the tincture. Coconut oil and hemp seed oil are two of the most commonly used oils in CBD tinctures. Hempseed oil is a great option, as it includes a high concentration of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids promote healthy skin and coat for your pet.

Finally, before buying any CBD oil for your dog or cat look for organic, grain-free and non-GMO products. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your dog or cat is eating the highest quality foods. Therefore, the quality of CBD oil is not something you should overlook. In addition to this, the safest and highest quality CBD tinctures come from the USA. Keep an eye out for tinctures that are not made in the USA. Also, check the ingredients label to see the filler used in the capsules. Most commonly, you will find either coconut powder or hemp seed powder. Both of these are fine options. As mentioned earlier, hempseed powder includes fatty acids which are beneficial to your pet’s health. Not only do they boost the immune system, but they promote healthy skin and fur as well.

While looking to buy CBD oil products for your dog or cat, you may notice that they come in many varieties and dosages. But, which dosage is optimal for your pet?

To give you a better understanding of how dosage works, we need to consider two factors. The first factor is the weight of your pet. The second is the severity of your pet’s condition.

Calculating the Right Dose

When it comes to weight, the general rule of thumb is to use 0.25mg of CBD per pound of bodyweight. For example, a dog that weighs 80 pounds may need 20 mg of CBD oil to manage its symptoms.  In this case, a 600mg bottle of CBD pet tincture may give you just enough for 30 doses. On the other hand, a smaller dog weighing 20 pounds may only need 5 mg of CBD oil per dose. In this case, a 150mg bottle of CBD pet tincture will give you just enough for 30 doses.

In regards to the severity of your pet’s condition, a more severe case may require a higher dosage. The general rule of thumb is to use 0.5mg of CBD per pound of body weight for severe cases. For example, let’s say the 80-pound dog normally requires 20mg of CBD oil. Now let’s say she is suffering from a severe case of epilepsy- to the point where she experiences heavy seizures on a recurring basis. In this case, you may consider using upwards of 40mg, which is half of her body weight.

Nowadays, there are hundreds, if not thousands of brands selling CBD products for dogs and cats. But how many of these companies should you actually trust? Where you buy the CBD oil for your dog or cat can greatly determine the effectiveness and quality of the product.

What to Look for

The first thing to look out for is the source of the CBD. There are countless numbers of hemp farms in the United States, but not all are grown equally.

In order to cut costs and increase production, many suppliers of CBD grow their hemp farms using artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals that are very toxic for your pet. Many of these farms may also use genetically modified (GMO) seeds in order to grow pest-resistant hemp crops. These crops are inorganic, and not healthy for the body.

In order to ensure your pet is not consuming any of these toxins, it is important to only purchase 100% organic CBD oil. It is a well-known fact that Colorado is one of the biggest exporters of high-quality organic hemp. Be on the lookout for CBD that is made from USA Colorado-grown hemp.

All HolistaPet CBD products for dogs and cats come from all-natural, 100% organic hemp, which is grown in Colorado. We take great pride in using only the highest quality ingredients in our products. This is because we believe your pet should only be eating great things, just like you are.

Here is a comparison chart that displays some popular choices for CBD and the dosages available. Be sure to do your research on choosing the best option for your pet and avoid overspending when possible.
