CBD Oil Helps Chihuahua Seizures [TESTED & APPROVED]
Seizures are very common in Chihuahuas. In fact, a survey carried out by the Chihuahua Club of America found that 45% of Chihuahua owners had bred or owned a Chihuahua with seizures.
When a dog has a seizure, it is terrifying for the animal, and for the owner. Occasional seizures won’t cause any lasting health problems but clusters of seizures may cause brain damage. A vet may prescribe medication to treat dog seizures but these medications have harsh side effects. This causes pet owners to turn to alternative treatments like CBD oil.
If you have a Chihuahua that has seizures and you want to manage those seizures naturally, CBD oil could be the answer you have been looking for.
Why Do Chihuahua’s Have Seizures?
Chihuahua seizures can be caused by many different things. It can be an inherited disorder, in which case it is called Idiopathic epilepsy. I can also be caused by other conditions including brain tumors, liver failure and kidney disease. That’s why it’s important to take your dog to a vet if your pet does experience a seizure.
Chihuahua seizures are caused by uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. Symptoms include drooling, falling to the ground, twitching, and jerking. Prior to a seizure, a dog may appear confused. After a seizure, a dog may appear to be dazed and disoriented. It may also experience temporary blindness.
Is CBD Safe to Give My Chihuahua?
Using CBD for Chihuahua seizures is perfectly safe and effective. Cannabidiol is a 100% natural product that is considered safe for both humans and pets. It is not advisable to buy the cheapest CBD oil that you can find. Cheap CBD oil may contain harmful additives. It may also not be strong enough to have the desired effect.
How Much CBD Should I Give My Chihuahua?
CBD oil is non-toxic and there have been no known overdoses even with high doses. However, like all supplements, there is no benefit in giving your pet too much.
The dosage of CBD will depend on the product you buy and the weight of your pet.
We recommend between 0.25mg – 0.5mg of CBD for every 1 lb of bodyweight.
Those guidelines will be based on the strength of the product and on the size and weight of the dog. As Chihuahuas are small dogs, you can expect the dose of CBD oil for Chihuahua seizures to be quite small.
For more info see our CBD Dosage Chart for each product.
It is advisable to give any breed of dog small doses of CBD oil to begin with. You can then increase the dose slowly as required.
Will CBD Get My Chihuahua High?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound. It will not make your dog high. People are often concerned that, because CBD is related to the marijuana plant, it will make their pets high. The truth is, it’s not the CBD that causes the high. The compound that causes the high is called THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) found mainly in marijuana and not so much in hemp.
Both CBD and THC belong to a group of compounds known as cannabinoids. There are more than 60 cannabinoids that have now been identified in hemp plant. There has been extensive testing on the effects of CBD, both on animals and on humans. These tests have proven that CBD has many medicinal benefits, but it does not cause a high.
It is important, though, that you research CBD products carefully when buying CBD oil for Chihuahua seizures. Some CBD products do contain higher levels of THC, which could make your dog high. The best CBD products for medicinal use contain less than 0.3% THC.
How CBD Will Help My Chihuahua?
There is very strong evidence to support the use of CBD oil to control seizures. One of the well documented early cases of using CBD for seizures was that of Charlotte Figi. She is a young girl from Colorado, USA. Charlotte has a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome. She was experiencing nearly 400 seizures every week. Her parents found that CBD was the only thing that controlled Charlotte’s seizures.
Since that case in 2013, a lot more research has been carried into the use of CBD oil for seizures. The results of one study were published in the medical journal in 2016. The study looked at 210 people with epilepsy who were treated with CBD for 12 weeks. The patients experienced an average reduction in seizures of 36%. 2% of the patients experienced no seizures at all during the test period.
Research into the use of CBD to treat seizures is still ongoing. The results to date, though, have led the American Epilepsy Society to confirm that CBD does reduce seizures. While more research still needs to be done, there is little doubt that CBD oil could reduce seizures in a Chihuahua.
How Much CBD Should I Give My Dog to Boost Appetite?
Amongst the many proven benefits of CBD oil is its ability to boost the appetite. Dogs can lose their appetite for many reasons. It could be due to an underlying medical condition, a side effect of medication, or it could be that the dog is a picky eater. One of the conditions that have been known to cause a loss of appetite is epilepsy.
CBD can help boost a dog’s appetite in several ways. It reduces nausea, it reduces anxiety, and it helps to regulate the appetite hormones. The guidelines as to how much CBD to give to a dog that is not eating are like those for using CBD for Chihuahua seizures. It will depend on the strength of the CBD products that you use, and on the dog’s size and weight. Most people find that 2.5mg – 5mg of CBD for every 10 LBS of body weight will be sufficient to boost a dog’s appetite.
The effectiveness of CBD oil for dog seizures is now well documented. It has been thoroughly tested and CBD is now approved in many countries. Only very recently, the UK granted its first license for the use of medicinal cannabis oil to treat a young girl’s epilepsy. This was the first case of its kind in a country that has very strict controls on cannabis-derived products.
Although CBD oil is still unregulated by bodies like the FDA, the use of CBD to treat seizures is growing. It is now widely accepted that CBD has anticonvulsant properties. It can be used to treat epilepsy in humans and animals, including Chihuahua seizures.
