Nervous Dog? These Natural Calming Tips May Help

Anxiety is a very common problem in most dogs. Even the calmest dog will experience some nervousness from time to time. A nervous dog will exhibit several symptoms which need to be identified early and treated before the problem develops further.

A fully developed anxiety condition is much more difficult to fix. It is good for the owner to know the common causes of nervousness in dogs and have some knowledge of the symptoms in order to correct the problem. So, what are some of the causes of nervousness in dogs and what are the symptoms? First, let’s look at the causes.

Causes of Nervousness in Dogs

Dog nervousness and anxiety is usually provoked by behavioral (personality) or situational causes. Here are some of the common causes of nervousness.

Environmental Changes

Dogs might not understand environmental changes like humans will do. Dogs become scared by environmental changes such as storms, barometric changes in the air and humidity changes. In these cases, if the dog is outside, it will develop nervousness and start showing abnormal behavior. It is, therefore, necessary to help a dog calm down during stormy weather.

Loud Noises & Unfamiliar Sounds

Household machines have been reported to cause nervousness. Vacuum cleaners, for instance, make a loud noise that our pets sometimes don’t like. Gardening tools such as leaf blowers and lawn mowers also cause a great deal of nervousness with our pets. The loud noise of fireworks, which are not a common occurrence, will also cause dogs to develop fears and experience anxiety.

Separation Anxiety & Nervousness

From day one, your dog has depended on you to always be there. The real truth, however, is that it is not always possible to always be at home with your pet. When the dog is a puppy it is constantly showered with attention and love. As your dog gets older, it may receive less attention. It’s this lack of attention that can sometimes cause a great deal of anxiety for your pet. When your pet is left alone for long periods of time, the anxiety could get worse and have bad results. Constant barking, howling, destroying of property, hole digging, door scratching, panting, and urinating on personal property are just some of the outcomes that separation anxiety can cause.

Social Anxiety in Dogs

You might experience your dog getting nervous when in the company of other new dogs. For example, taking your dog to the dog park or jogging with another friend’s dog. These are situations where your dog can experience nervousness from either sexual frustration (wanting to mate) or wanting to play, sniff, and lick the other dog. Social anxiety can also occur when your dog meets a new person as well. New faces can sometimes cause nervousness or anxiety.

Travel Anxiety in Dogs

Dogs aren’t always up for traveling. Some dogs can become very anxious if ever faced with traveling, especially in a car. Car rides are scary for a dog who isn’t used to the motions, sounds, and vibrations that a car can create. Travel can cause many reactions including; car sickness, barking, yelping, panting and excessive drooling.

Those are some of the common causes of a nervous dog. So, how will you identify a nervous dog? It is helpful to know that the dog is nervous if it shows the following symptoms:

Symptoms of a Nervous Dog

  1. Aggressive chewing
  2. Destroying property
  3. Excessive barking or howling
  4. Excessive whining or whimpering
  5. Pacing back and forth
  6. Excessive licking the nose and mouth
  7. Digging or scratching
  8. Panting
  9. Trembling or shaking

These are some of the common symptoms that show your dog needs calming. So how do you go about the issue? We have some natural tips that will help calm your dog’s anxiety.

5 Tips for Calming a Nervous Dog

Exercising To Calm Down a Nervous Dog

In human beings, exercising will help in relieving stress and tension. The same applies to dogs too, and therefore it is advisable that you expose your dog to regular exercising.

Exercising is good not only for physical health but also to relieve stress & nervousness. When a dog is exercising, there is a release of serotonin, a hormone which helps improve mood. Serotonin has been known to increase the levels of calmness in a dog.

Secondly, the excess pent-up energy is released to help reduce the anxiety. Based on those two factors, activities like a game of fetch, running around the compound, or even jogging regularly with your dog helps to relieve the tension and promote calmness.

Distraction Method to Calm A Nervous Dog

If your dog gets nervous, especially when meeting new people or traveling, you can distract the dog’s brain to calm it down. When you cause a distraction, the attention will shift to the activity you have introduced the dog to, helping control the situation. The best distraction can be introducing a game that your dog likes. For example, a game of fetch or even rubbing the dog on the neck area to cause a sensational feeling. Involve the dog with familiar activities that they already know to be rewarding.

These methods work well since the divided attention allows the dog to become accustomed to whatever was causing the nervousness. While using the commands method, you can treat the dog with some nice food that it likes so that it can quickly calm down.

Another good distraction method is to introduce familiar toys like a favorite animal or chew toy. This will help the dog to tolerate whatever was causing the nervousness.

Give Your Nervous Dog a Relaxing Massage

Just like in humans, a good massage will help calm your dog’s nerves. A massage helps in controlling and minimizing the anxiety. Give your dog a good massage using long and slow strokes, so as to soothe and comfort them. Talking to your dog in a calming tone will help while you are giving the msssage.

Use of Slow Music Rhythms to Calm a Nervous Dog

Music works wonders, not only for human beings, but also for pets. Your nervous dog will be calm when you introduce some soft music to its ears. Consider leaving your radio on when you leave the house. Try making a soothing playlist of soft classical music and put this on repeat for your dog to enjoy while you’re gone. While traveling, you can also play some nice music in the car to keep your dog engaged. Music helps the dog forget the anxiety associated with separation.

Calming a nervous dog is never easy, but by trying some of these methods, you should be able to ease the anxiety naturally and effectively. Always remember to give your dog a reward when they behave as expected.

Use Calming Dog Treats for Anxiety

You can find many dog treats that are formulated especially for anxiety & nervousness. These treats include supplements and ingredients that promote calmness and help aid symptoms of anxiety. Some of these supplements include l-theanine, chamomile, and hemp seed powder, to name a few.

One of Holistapet’s superior products are these treats specifically designed for stress and anxiety problems in dogs. I like them because they are the best organic solution that has no side effects. My dog was adopted from a shelter. The previous owners I think would abuse him so he is scared of any loud noise from a car driving by to the lawnmower guy doing the landscaping. I have been giving him some of these treats and it calms him and helps him to relax when the guy is mowing our lawn.

All good we just got our product and my dog loves them. I got these for my dog who get’s scared from the loud noise during New Years Eve. 21. celeste_konieczny (verified owner)

I have a 1 year old lab/pit mix who has severe separation anxiety. I did a lot of research on numerous products and websites and this is by far the best treats to give her. She doesn’t tear up the house or have accidents anymore. It helps calm her down when we leave for work and with car rides. I will buy again.

Great review! Thank you so much for sharing!

  22. WRPrkr

Dogs love these. Got my order yesterday and already ordering more to have on hand. LOVE THESE

  23. kimberly.ostermeier

My dogs LOVE this flavor! I’ve tried several different CBD treats with them and so far this is the winner. It’s good that they’re a lose dose treat because even though my dogs weigh 80 and 100 pounds, they don’t tolerate high doses of anything well. Giving them 2 or 3 of these a day has helped with their anxiety (my pit bull has PTSD from severe abuse he had to endure before we rescued him). I’m eager to see if they help with fatty tumors and allergies that they also have. Will update my review once they’ve been on them for a few months.
    Love these treats!

  24. carmen andia

Our dog Bailey’s nickname is/was Sir Barks Alot. Now that he is taking his treats, he has definitely calmed down, especially at night. I’m not sure why he was doing it but now, it is a once a week occurrence instead of nightly. Last night, he was begging for the treats, the bag is almost empty so hope the auto ship is on the way!

  25. tisha.chitta

Our puppet has massive separation anxiety, and shows it in naughty ways – like peeing and pooping inside the house. These treats have absolutely helped with that issue.

  26. sam713 (verified owner)

I bought these for my addisonian, epileptic dog, poor baby. Since she got diagnosed with addisons her anxiety is much higher. I got the treats to try and she loves them, she hasn’t been on them long enough to say if they’re helping with anxiety yet.

  27. borgetto23

CBD WORKS!!! IT helped my dog with Anxiety

  28. lhealyx (verified owner)

These treats really helped my dog who has anxiety. 20 minutes after giving them to him his behavior calmed greatly. I will probably switch to the tintures in the future because he is a large dog and needs a strong dose so the treats run out quickly.

  29. patricia.seaman13 (verified owner)

Really helps with our newest dogs separation anxiety. it has saved my carpet and goodness knows what else she might it. I am thinking of switching to oil because as I have two dogs I go through the treat quickly.

  30. mikeposko (verified owner)

    Ours dogs love these

  31. lydiamkittelson (verified owner)

My dog has severe anxiety. This has helped him so much when we leave home. He will not destroy things, he doesn’t have a fearful look in his eyes and he can just relax and enjoy his time. He cannot go without these, and he loves the flavor!

  32. simmonsk0620 (verified owner)

My 1 year old dog has bad separation anxiety whenever I leave for work. These treats calm her down without making her “out of it” and she loves the taste. Definitely refrigerate for better quality and overall shelf life.

  33. kiddo.castaneda91 (verified owner)

Got these for my pibble right before the 4th of July to help his anxiety with fireworks and boy did they ease him! Would HIGHLY recommend!

  34. sarah.box (verified owner)

Got these for my girl right before the 4th of July. They shipped fast, and work like a dream. She was calm all through the fireworks. I’ve also used them during thunderstorms and they are amazing! Will definitely be buying another bag to replenish my stock.
