Melatonin got us through fireworks season

"My five-year-old mixed-breed mutt has pretty strong drug resistance and rebound anxiety. She's also TERRIFIED of fireworks and thunderstorms, and I had never found a truly successful way to help her, and even CBD didn't alleviate her panic. This fourth of July was the first time I tried the Holista melatonin supplements for her fireworks anxiety. I gave her one dose in the late afternoon, and four hours later gave her another dose. Although she wasn't able to fall asleep until close to midnight, unlike with any other treatment attempts, the melatonin actually seemed to keep her pretty calm! She went through the entire night (with explosions literally all around us) WITHOUT panting, pacing, whining, barking, shaking, crawling under the bed, and otherwise exhibiting the kind of panic that has made me concerned that she will have a heart attack. She ate her dinner, drank water. And even slept in her own, uncovered bed--not UNDER my bed or in her crate--while fireworks boomed all around us. I'm so grateful to have a solution--and the fact that it isn't big pharma is even better. THANK YOU Holistapet!"

CBD soft calming chews works

"CBD soft calming chews works great for my 15 year old dog!"

Mary P. (5/5)

It seems to work.......

"........with some adjustments. I've ordered this before, but my Yorkie (with no teeth) wouldn't take them. We baked them (to dehydrate the treats), then ground them up and mixed the powder with chicken broth. Then put it in a syringe and he took it like a champ. Maybe Holistapet could engineer a similar product and market it as liquid Melatonin."

Can Dogs Take Melatonin?

Yes, dogs can take melatonin, and it is sometimes used in veterinary medicine to support healthy sleep patterns and calm behavior. Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle, and veterinarians may recommend it for dogs experiencing sleep disorders, nighttime restlessness, or temporary stress. Because dogs naturally produce melatonin, small supplemental amounts can help support normal circadian rhythms.

How Long Does Melatonin Take to Work for Dogs?

Melatonin may begin supporting calm behavior within about 20–60 minutes after administration. Because it works with the body’s natural sleep-wake signals, it is often given before bedtime or before potentially stressful situations. The calming effects typically last 4–8 hours, depending on the dog’s size, metabolism, and sensitivity to the supplement.

When Do Pet Owners Give Dogs Melatonin

Melatonin is typically given in the evening to support healthy nighttime sleep cycles. Some pet owners also give melatonin before situations that may cause temporary stress, such as travel or changes in routine. Providing the supplement around the same time each day can help maintain a consistent circadian rhythm.

How Much Melatonin Should I Give My Dog? [Provision & Dosage Guidance]

We recommend giving your dog our Calming Melatonin Soft Chews once a day or as needed. Here are the recommended serving suggestions based on your dog’s weight:

Less than 20 lbs = 1 chew*
20–50 lbs = 2 chews*
More than 50 lbs = 3 chews*

*or as needed

Always follow product serving guidelines and consult your veterinarian if you have questions about your dog’s individual needs.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects?

Melatonin is generally well tolerated by dogs, but mild side effects can occasionally occur. These may include temporary drowsiness, digestive upset, or slight changes in energy levels. Research indicates melatonin has a relatively wide safety margin in mammals, but proper dosage is important. Pet-specific supplements formulated with safe ingredient levels help reduce the risk of unwanted reactions.

Can Dogs Have Too Much Melatonin?

Yes, dogs can have too much melatonin if given higher amounts than recommended. Excess melatonin may cause mild side effects such as drowsiness, digestive upset, or changes in energy levels. Always follow the serving guidelines on pet-specific supplements and consult a veterinarian if you’re unsure about proper dosing.

Are There Any Drug Interactions With Melatonin for Dogs?

Melatonin may interact with certain medications, so it’s important to check with a veterinarian before giving it to your dog. Potential drug interactions could occur with medications that affect hormones, sedation, or blood pressure. A veterinarian can help determine whether melatonin is appropriate for your dog’s current health routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dog melatonin is widely recognized for its calming effects, which can help dogs stay more relaxed during stressful situations such as travel, loud noises, or changes in routine. Beyond sleep support, melatonin may also help maintain balanced hormone levels and support healthy skin and coat function, making it a versatile wellness ingredient for overall canine comfort and relaxation.

Our Melatonin for Dogs is formulated specifically for canine use using natural ingredients and calming botanical extracts. Each batch is produced in a GMP-certified facility and third-party lab tested to ensure purity and consistent quality, giving pet owners confidence in safe, pet-focused wellness support. Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about this product.

How Can I Tell If My Dog May Need Melatonin Supplements?

You may consider melatonin supplements if your dog shows signs of difficulty settling down or maintaining a regular sleep routine. Dogs that pace at night, struggle to relax before bedtime, or appear overly restless during stressful situations may benefit from additional sleep and relaxation support. Melatonin supplements are often used when dogs experience nighttime wakefulness, situational stress (such as fireworks or travel), or age-related sleep changes. If your dog frequently seems unable to relax or has trouble maintaining a calm nighttime routine, melatonin may help support more balanced sleep and relaxation patterns.

Can Melatonin Help Dogs With Hair Loss?

Melatonin has been studied in veterinary medicine for certain types of hair loss in dogs, such as seasonal flank alopecia. Some research suggests it may support normal hair growth cycles linked to hormonal changes. However, results can vary, and a veterinarian should evaluate the underlying cause of hair loss.

Is Melatonin Considered a Dietary Supplement for Dogs?

Yes, melatonin is typically categorized as a dietary supplement when formulated for dogs. It is used to support normal sleep cycles, relaxation, and overall wellness rather than as a prescription medication. Pet-specific supplements are designed with safe ingredient levels for canine use.

How Should You Store Melatonin Supplements for Dogs?

Melatonin supplements should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keeping the container tightly sealed helps maintain product freshness and potency. Always store melatonin out of reach of pets and children to prevent accidental overconsumption.

Why Healthy Sleep Cycles Matter for Dogs

Just like humans, dogs rely on healthy sleep patterns to maintain physical and mental balance. Adequate rest supports energy levels, cognitive function, and overall well-being. Disruptions in sleep cycles may lead to nighttime pacing, restlessness, or difficulty settling down. Supporting consistent sleep routines can help dogs maintain a calm and predictable daily rhythm.

Can Melatonin Help Dogs With Sleep Disturbances?

Some dogs experience occasional nighttime restlessness due to environmental changes, aging, or disruptions in daily routine. Because melatonin helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle, supplementation may help calm nighttime behavior in some dogs. By reinforcing the body’s natural signals for rest, melatonin can help promote more predictable sleep patterns.
